Iconic sitcom star dies just three weeks after cancer diagnosis

Saved by the Bell actor Dustin Diamond has died aged 44.

The former child star - who was known for playing Screech in the popular 90s sitcom - had stage 4 lung cancer and was diagnosed just three weeks ago.

Taking to Facebook to announce the tragic news, his team revealed he passed away Monday morning, local time.

He was being treated in a hospital in Florida.

“We are saddened to confirm of Dustin Diamond’s passing on Monday, February 1st, 2021 due to carcinoma,” Diamond’s official social media page read.

“He was diagnosed with this brutal, relentless form of malignant cancer only three weeks ago.

“In that time, it managed to spread rapidly throughout his system; the only mercy it exhibited was its sharp and swift execution. Dustin did not suffer. He did not have to lie submerged in pain. For that, we are grateful.”

According to TMZ he was taken off breathing machines to transfer to hospice care.

A close friend of Diamond, Dan Block, said he had a "huge lump" on his neck for a long time but avoided going to the hospital out of fear people would take photos of him and post them online.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Saved by the Bell: NOW!🐯 (@sbtbnow)

“I know that the reason he didn’t get help is because when he goes out people take pictures, put it on the internet and say not nice things about him,” Block told the publication last month.

“He’s subject to public ridicule all the time and it sucks. People need to know he is a human.”

His Saved by the Bell co-star Mario Lopez told Variety that he had urged his former colleague to seek treatment a few weeks ago.

“I actually just spoke with him a couple of weeks ago. He was reluctant to go in (to hospital) for a while because he didn’t know if anything was going to get out,” Lopez said.

And I said, ‘Bro, that’s foolish, you’ve got to get in there and take care of yourself and forget what people are saying.’

“Some people thought his illness was a joke, which is awful, but the internet always spills tales. When all of this was happening, I was optimistic that he would make a recovery, but it was obviously too late.

“From when I found out he was sick to his passing, it’s been incredibly quick. It’s so fresh, it’s incredibly hard to process.”

Diamond started his first round of chemotherapy just two weeks ago.

His family has a history of the disease, with his mother dying of breast cancer.

Dustin Hoffman's showdown with TV host over sexual harassment claims

Dustin Hoffman got into a heated argument with TV host John Oliver during a public Q&A session after Oliver grilled him about recent sexual harassment allegations made against him.

Last month, Hoffman was accused by Anna Graham-Hunter of sexually harassing her when she was 17 years old in 1985 on the set of the TV movie Death of a Salesman.

Referencing Hoffman’s apology to his former production assistant, Oliver asked, “You’ve made one statement in print — does that feel like enough to you?”

“First of all, it didn’t happen, the way she reported,” the actor said, according to Deadline.

Oliver replied, “It’s that part of the response to this stuff that pisses me off. It is reflective of who you were. You’ve given no evidence to show that it didn’t happen. There was a period of time when you were creeping around women. It feels like a cop-out to say, ‘Well, this isn’t me.’ Do you understand how that feels like a dismissal?”

Hoffman responded, “You weren’t there.”

“I’m glad,” Oliver said.

The Q&A was held during an event to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Hoffman’s film Wag the Dog.

According to Deadline, the panel lasted for roughly an hour and was filled with heated exchanges about the sexual harassment claims throughout.

“You’ve put me on display here,” Hoffman told Oliver. “You have indicted me ... That’s not innocent until proven guilty.”

Reportedly, Hoffman tried to blame the time period for his actions, saying the atmosphere was different when the alleged abuse occurred. However, Oliver did not take this excuse as a sufficient answer.

“I don’t love that answer either,” the British comedian said.

“What response do you want?” Hoffman asked.

“It doesn’t feel self-reflective in the way it seems the incident demands,” replied Oliver. “I get no pleasure from this conversation,” he added. “But you and I are not the victims here.”

Referencing the allegations made against him, Hoffman asked, “Do you believe this stuff you’re reading?”

Oliver responded that he did believe the allegations “because she would have no reason to lie”.

Shortly after a person in the crowd shouted, “Thank you for believing women.”

Meryl Streep addresses claims Dustin Hoffman ‘groped’ her when they first met

An old interview where Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep claimed Dustin Hoffman groped her has resurfaced.

The 1979 interview with Time Magazine has resurfaced following the recent sexual harassment allegations against Hoffman.

In the interview, Streep recounts the first time she met her Kramer vs. Kramer co-star.

“He came up to me and said, ‘I’m Dustin — burp — Hoffman,’ and he put his hand on my breast,” Streep said.

“What an obnoxious pig, I thought.”

However, Streep’s representative told E! News that the article was “not an accurate rendering of that meeting”.

“There was an offence and it is something for which Dustin apologised. And Meryl accepted that,” said Streep’s representative.

It is uncertain whether Hoffman ever commented on that encounter.

In Streep’s biography Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep other interactions with Hoffman were discussed.

Streep said Hoffman slapped her across the face before filming an emotional scene from Kramer vs. Kramer. She also said that Hoffman taunted her about her former boyfriend John Cazale, who died of lung cancer while she was dating him.

Recently, two women have accused Hoffman of sexual harassment.

Last week, Anna Graham Hunter alleged Hoffman groped her on the set of the 1985 movie Death of a Salesman and “talked about sex to me and in front of me.”

Hunter was 17 years old when the alleged incident took place.

Playwright Wendy Riss Gatsiounis claimed Hoffman asked her if she had ever slept with a man over the age of 40.

He also allegedly asked her to accompany him to a store to try on clothing and when she declined, he refused to adapt her play into a movie.

Hoffman apologised after Hunter spoke out saying “it is not reflective of who I am”.

Dustin Hoffman accused of sexually harassing teen girl

Writer Anna Graham Hunter was just 17 years old when she interned on the 1985 made-for-television film adaptation of Death of a Salesman, but her first experience working in Hollywood left her with lasting emotional scars.

Hunter wrote in a guest article for The Hollywood Reporter she was subject to constant sexual harassment from Dustin Hoffman, now 80.

“He asked me to give him a foot massage my first day on set; I did,” she wrote. “He was openly flirtatious, he grabbed my ass, he talked about sex to me and in front of me.”

At first, Hunter admits she “loved the attention”, but things quickly took a dark turn.

“One morning I went to his dressing room to take his breakfast order; he looked at me and grinned, taking his time. Then he said, ‘I’ll have a hard-boiled egg … and a soft-boiled clitoris.’ His entourage burst out laughing. I left, speechless. Then I went to the bathroom and cried.”

Hunter, who kept a detailed diary during her time as an intern, shared some unsettling extracts describing the harassment she experienced.

“Today, when I was walking Dustin to his limo, he felt my ass four times,” she alleges. “I hit him each time, hard, and told him he was a dirty old man. He took off his hat and pointed to his head (shaved for the part) and said, ‘No, I’m a dirty young man, I have a full head of hair.’”

On another day, she wrote, “This morning when I asked Dustin what he wanted for breakfast, he said something that beat even his lows. It was worse than anything anyone has ever said to me on the street. It was so gross I couldn’t say anything. I just turned around and walked out.”

Upon being contacted by The Hollywood Reporter, Hoffman issued the following apology: “I have the utmost respect for women and feel terrible that anything I might have done could have put her in an uncomfortable situation. I am sorry. It is not reflective of who I am.”

Dustin Hoffman “slapped" Meryl Streep on set of Kramer vs Kramer

We’ve heard of method acting, but did Dustin Hoffman go too far? A new biography by Michael Schulman details what he describes as “shocking behaviour” on the set of 1979 movie Kramer vs Kramer.

In an excerpt published on Vanity Fair, Schulman claims that Hoffman struck Streep on the face on just the second day of filming.

“Dustin and Meryl took their positions on the other side of the apartment door,” writes Schulman.

“Then something happened that shocked not just Meryl but everyone on set. Right before their entrance, Dustin slapped her hard across the cheek, leaving a red mark.”

That’s not all. Film executive Richard Fischooff said the academy award winning actor would use intimate details about the actress’ personal life to “get the response that he though she should be giving in the performance”.

Hoffman allegedly once stood off camera and “started taunting” Streep about John Cazale, her boyfriend of two-years who died from lung cancer not long before filming began. In a later scene, he smacked a wine glass off the table so it shattered on the restaurant wall and Meryl would be authentically startled.

"Next time you do that, I’d appreciate you letting me know,’ she said.”

According to the director, Robert Benton, not once did Streep spit the dummy or react negatively to Hoffman’s taunts.

“I never saw one moment of emotion leak out of her except in performance,” Benton said.

Kramer vs Kramer was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won five of them, including one for Streep for Best Supporting Actress. See the trailer above.

Sounds like one interesting book, will you read it?

Related links:

20 movies turning 20 in 2016

The top 10 classic horror movies of all time

Our favourite movie dance scenes of all time
